At its Jan. 26 faculty meeting, the NIU Department of Sociology endorsed the following statement:

In the interest of free speech, cultural diversity, and the enhancement of intellectual experience, it is necessary to expend university financial resources. Bringing Louis Farrakhan to the Northern Illinois University campus is consistent with these goals.

For these reasons, the Department of Sociology supports the funding of controversial speakers for lectures at Northern Illinois University.
