Weakens cause

This is in response to Colleen Halliman’s letter and all other letters previously printed in The Northern Star concerning the racism issue.

Threatening one another through your voice in The Star is doing nothing for the causes each side is fighting for. Make a stand in a mature manner and stop writing such threats as “THIS TIME THE REVOLUTION WON’T BE TELEVISED” and “We are keeping it (our heritage) BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.”

If you feel that you are intelligent enough to express your feelings to an entire university of men and women of all races and religions you are sadly mistaken.

Quit beating around the bush and take the issue for what it really is–a social and political problem facing all persons of our nation from the east to west coasts and all persons worldwide.

Certainly one will run across organizations that are predominantly one race, religion, or creed for the rest of their lifetime, but fighting to change the beliefs of such organizations is a hopeless cause.

Remember–printed words lead no reason for threats.

As for Colleen Halliman’s letter of Jan. 18,—Colleen you have a lot to learn. As you sit back and rip into James R. Hart’s letter of Nov. 28th, you overlook many realities that you need to review.

It would be most beneficial for you to research the files of The Northern Star and review all letters written in the past few years concerning the racism issue. I will leave what is there for you to learn alone.

One thing–I am a white female against racism in any way, shape or form. Remember that not everyone is “out to get black men and women,” and believe it or not there are just as many racist black Americans as there are caucasian Americans.

Why don’t you try fighting to get rid of racism on both sides Colleen? I know I do. By fighting for the best interest of black Americans you are blatantly admitting your own racist ignorance.

Don’t forget that racism affects all Americans, so try to fight for the best interest of all NIU students.

Also, remember that my forefathers are DEAD–and whether you want to live in the past or not is a decision you’ve made based on your own weakness. The rest of us will go on living in the present.
