Do something
January 31, 1990
A recent event has come to my attention. A group of approximately 20 of my friends were on their way to enjoy a night out, when they were approached by approximately 10 blacks.
A brawl between the two groups broke out after obscene remarks by the blacks followed by some punches and shoves that were thrown by the blacks. Five or six out of the group of approximately 20 actually fought. The fight did not last very long because the police quickly arrived on the scene.
The group of blacks fled, leaving one of my friends on the ground. He had been kicked by about six of the assailants while on the ground. He sustained a broken nose and four stitches, while the others that fought only received minor bruises to the face and the rib cage area.
The police did nothing to apprehend the assailants and no charges or reports were ever filed by the police. I do not wish to make this a black-white issue or an issue about racism, but it is a fact that a fight broke out between the two groups. Who started it? Well, it doesn’t matter anymore. What does matter is that if no action is taken, incidents like this one will continue to happen for no apparant reason.
We have come here to NIU to learn and grow as human beings. The police could have looked into the incident quite a bit more than what they did. Come on, someone sustained enough injury to force him to go to the hospital. I don’t care whether the person was white, black, or oriental; justice should have been served.
Also, I could care less if the incident was white against black, black against white, or any other ethnic background versus another. What I do care about is the humane treatment of fellow human beings…no matter what the cost is.
