No like, no listen
January 23, 1990
I would like to awaken people to a problem that could rage out of control if action isn’t taken now.
The Jan. 18 Weekender contained an article describing how “music retailers…are pulling artists’ albums off their shelves” to avoid the wrath of music watch-dog groups.
I personally feel that heavy metal lyrics are obscene and offensive. But I also feel that if I don’t like it, I simply won’t listen to it.
It’s not up to me to judge others listening preferences. It’s not up to the Parents Music Research Center (PMRC) either.
If the public doesn’t start raising it’s voice against the censoring of lyrics now, in a few years the only thing on the radio will be classical music.
Why? Because rock might have “mature” themes that are offensive, Christian rock would be discriminatory to the Jewish people, Reggae and folk music would be too ethnic, etc.
If music is censored or banned, the most universal means of communication will be shut down. Let’s keep the lines open.
