OK SA, where’s the beef?

It has come to the end of another semester and we must ask ourselves what the Student Association has accomplished.

There are certain members of the SA who wanted to get involved and accomplish things for the well-being of the students. However, as a group, there are few positive things to be said about the effectiveness of the SA this semester.

The semester started with a not-so-well-planned election with little student participation and was compounded by problems that arose throughout the semester. The credibility of the SA in the eyes of the DeKalb City Council was damaged by the unprofessional attitudes of executive board members and advisers.

One fiasco lead to the next as the city council incident was followed by an SA Supreme Court hearing to determine whether Brian Subatich, SA Community Affairs adviser, could be removed from his position. It seemed certain SA decision makers were unsure of what the SA rules were when presenting and determining the case.

Subatich’s case proved the SA needed some constituional revisions, and fast. The SA did respond by adding a few amendments to its constitution, but nothing major. And the new amendments were easily overlooked when SA members realized it does have bylaws.

Overall, the SA needs a lot of work if it wants to effectively serve student interests. Hopefully, concerned students who really want the SA to be more effective will speak up next semester and get things progressing.
