Alarms needed
December 4, 1989
I am writing to you about smoke alarms in the dorms, and I don’t know who to speak to about this, so I thought I would write you. I think the topic of having (or not having) smoke alarms in the dorms needs to be addressed.
I am a resident of Lincoln Hall. The floor I am on has fire alarm bells, but I do not think this is adequate.
A few people I have spoken to said every room should have a smoke alarm, and it even could be required by law.
Although it might be different in other dorms, the floor I am on in Lincoln does not have a smoke alarm in each room. My floor is a non-smoking floor, but there are at least three rooms whose occupants smoke.
I know these people, and I have nothing against them—I just want smoke alarms in all of the rooms for our protection.
It only takes one cigarette to burn down a house or a dorm. Everyone at one time or another has heard or seen what a fire can do. I would really like to see an article in the Star about fire safety and how the subject of smoke alarms in the dorms (or not in the dorms) is handled by the university.
