SA’s politics were wicked

Politics is not a playground game. That’s something the Student Association has to learn.

Not only has the SA as a whole proved to be very ineffective this semester, but it also has proved that it cannot coexist with the big boys on the block.

In its dealings with the DeKalb City Council, the SA has come off looking unprofessional, inexperienced and presumptious.

Specifically, the issue of choosing a 7th Ward alderman comes to mind. In October, the city council approved junior Jeff Monroe for the job. Monroe was not the SA’s favorite and this fact became known when the two groups confronted on the subject.

A certain member of SA leadership apparently felt it was appropriate behavior to call city council members “wicked people.”

OK, not all members of the SA behaved in this manner, and there were probably quite a few of them who did not approve of this behavior.

However, the incident dealt a very serious blow to the SA’s credibility as a student government organization where the city council stands. Hopefully, it was not a lasting one. Those members of the group who believe the SA’s image gets tainted by this kind of behavior should speak up, or should have spoken up, about the way they feel.

SA members are students just like the rest of us. However, those members who really care should do their best next semester to speak up and patch up outside relationships. Try to make outsiders forget that you are students and act like professionals.
