No table turning
December 5, 1989
This is in response to the Nov. 29 letter, “Racial incident.” The writer of that letter obviously was referring to the Greek Row incident. You were wondering why people put so much focus on that incident and not on yours (when the roles were reversed).
First, let me give you the definition of “racism” from the Webster’s Dictionary. It is “the assumption that psychocultural traits and capacities are determined by biological race that races differ decisively from one another which is usually coupled with a belief in the inherent superiority of a particular race and its domination over others.” What you fail to realize is that superiority and dominance stems from one thing: POWER.
The power to control others physically and psychologically. The group that has the strong hold on power in this society is the white people. Maybe the five white guys involved in the Greek row incident were not racist. However, that potential is still great; a lot greater than in your incident. Your letter’s intent was not to expose and solve a problem. Its intent was to change the situation and prove a point, which you failed to do. So, please, stop trying to turn the tables and accept the problem for what it is.
