well I know it works.

“Sauce” is pouring it on. Stacey Robinson, who wears jersey No. 7, turned in the seventh NIU 1,000-yard rushing season Saturday when he rushed for 138 yards in the Huskies’ win over Southwestern Louisiana. In the process Robinson passed both Adam Dach (906 yards in 1988) and Pete Roth (1,008 in 1982) to become the sixth most prolific single-season rusher in school history. “Sauce” should pass both 1,000-yard efforts of Allen Ross (1,033 in 1978, 1,043 in 1977) Saturday against Toledo to move into fourth on the list of single-season rushers.
Evening up the record. The last two games of the season will be pivotal ones in NIU’s quest to earn a bowl bid, but the contests also mean an added something to coach Jerry Pettibone. If NIU were to win both games, Pettibone would move his NIU and career head-coaching record to .500. The head Huskie currently stands at 25-27-1 after going 6-16 in his first two seasons.
A trio of Huskie setbacks. NIU women tennis players Hild Andersch, Jana Garrison and Monica Larson combined to win only one set in their appearance at the Rolex Indoor Regional Tournament Thursday in Madison, Wis. Andersch lost her lone singles match to Notre Dame’s Katie Clark (7-5, 6-4), as did Garrison to Northwestern’s Julie Staples (6-4, 6-0). Garrison and Larson teamed in doubles to win their first set against the Eastern Michigan duo of Caryn Stubbe-Naomi Mokelke. However, the EMU pair came back to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Season-stopping shutouts. The NIU field hockey team closed its 1989 campaign this weekend with a couple Midwest Collegiate Conference shutout losses. Third-ranked Iowa handed the Huskies a 2-0 loss Saturday before Ohio State squeaked past them 1-0 the following day. NIU closed the season with a 9-8 overall record. Its 4-6 record in the Midwest Collegiate left them in a third-place tie with Michigan in the conference’s final standings.
Off-and-swimming. Coach Dave Clark liked what he saw Friday when the NIU men swimmers won their second consecutive dual meet—a 150-92 thrashing of Western Illinois. NIU started off on the right foot as the Huskies finished one-two in the 400-yard medley relay with the top foursome of Curt Streder, Mark Oostman, Andy Flodin and Todd Klumb clocking in at 3:39.69. Six Huskie individuals won firsts in the NIU victory.
Mixed reviews. The women’s swimming team opened its season with a win and a second-place performance this weekend at Western Illinois. The Huskies started the weekend with a 131-105 dual-meet win over the Westerwinds on Friday and followed that with a second-place effort in the four-team Western Relays Saturday. SIU won the relays with 178 points, while NIU’s 122 points were good enough to defeat WIU (106) and Northern Iowa (82).
