The editorial, “Representation not ‘OK’,” which in essence states that Dave Murphy is unqualified to be appointed to the Board of Regents because he has been a Community College Trustee for McHenry Community College, challenges me to respond.

1. I am a community college trustee. I have known Dave Murphy for a number of years. He will be fair, honest, have a strong sense of financial responsibility and he will commit the time and effort required. He has solid public service background.

2. I see no “pressing issues” that the Board of Regents will face that require more than an open mind, an understanding of public education in Illinois, experience in making decisions and personal integrity.

3. On a more personal note, the tone of this editorial to me does not reflect the thinking of an uncoached, undergraduate writing an editorial for The Northern Star. Why tee off on a person unfairly? Is the purpose of the editorial to challenge the governor, to disclaim Dave Murphy without reviewing his credentials or to separate governing boards?
