Opinion off base
November 28, 1989
I am writing in response to Malaina Stokes’ Nov. 7 letter in which, as usual, a black person cried racism. In the letter, Stokes referred to the beating incident that occurred the weekend of Oct. 20 and adds, “If the incident had been five black men attacking a white student, there would be hell to pay.”
Stokes’ opinions are absurd and not evident in our society. As a matter of fact, it seems to be the opposite. Jimmy the Greek expressed facts that didn’t sit well with the black community, and he was fired. On the other hand, we can look at Jesse Jackson, who has said things insulting to whites and called the Jews “Hymies,” and he ran for president?! And he is supposed to be for all the people?! I don’t think so.
But yet, if whites don’t vote for Jackson, it’s because whites are racist and will only vote for a white candidate. Yet, if 98 percent of the black voters vote for the black candidate, what does that say about blacks? Truth is, nobody says anything about that.
A lot of situations called racist really aren’t racist at all. Take, for instance, the Martha-Palmer issue. Palmer’s contract as a counselor for the CHANCE program was not renewed, and the blacks started calling NIU racist. Palmer’s contract wasn’t renewed because she wasn’t performing her job satisfactorily. Nothing more. Nothing less. By the way, Martha’s non-renewal was approved by her boss, a black person, and the director of the CHANCE program, a black person.
eferring to discrimination, it seems whites are coming out at the bottom. Where’s the Constitution? Where is equality? Blacks can get in this school and schools in general with lower ACT scores—FACT. Blacks get hired before whites in certain job situations just because they are black and the firm has to meet its minority quota—FACT. Whatever happened to choosing the person with the best qualifications?
At this university, we have an InterFraternity Council, which includes white and black members. It is not called the White Greek Council. Why is there a Black Greek Council? It seems blacks are welcome in white organizations and events but not vice versa. What would whites be called if they started a White Greek Council, a White Student Union or on a national level, a White Miss America Pageant? Heaven forbid a white person ever wear a “white-by-popular-demand” shirt. Think about it.
