UC needs more proposals
November 14, 1989
The Student Association is making a good effort in trying to alleviate some of the student attendance problems in the University Council, but it might not be the right way to go.
SA President Huda Scheidelman proposed a plan that would give the SA final approval on all 14 student UC nominations and still keep one of the Student Advisory Councils’ recommendations.
Currently, only seven of the 14 UC appointments are made by the SA and the other seven are appointed by the advisory council of each college.
Having the SA make the final approval on all of the nominations might help decrease the problem of students not being appointed to the UC until late in the semester. However, there are some feelings that the individual colleges would not be adequately represented if Scheidelman’s proposal is implemented.
There are problems in getting student represenatation off the ground from the beginning of the semester, but that does not necessarily mean it should be taken over by the SA.
The SA’s proposal does address some legitimate concerns, however, the UC will have to consider other options that might be more appropriate to get students involved in the meetings earlier in the semester. If the advisory councils do not agree with Scheidelman’s plan, it might be to their advantage to come up with ideas of their own.
