An ‘outright lie’
November 6, 1989
I am as outraged at Kelli Christiansen’s column, “Stop reading now, every word is a lie,” as I am with Greg Rivera’s article “Many battle on abortion rights,” about the Feminist Front-sponsored video “Abortion For Survival,” and the responses and discussion that followed, which was in fact, completely falsified. Greg Rivera’s article was a complete lie. Yes Kelli, and other readers of the Star, it was beyond simply twisting the truth—it was a totally fabricated outright lie!
We never, not once mentioned taking legislative action or lobbying, and yet this is what the Star claimed we all discussed and agreed upon. I resent Kelli Christiansen’s accusations that the Star in fact printed a truthful documentation of that meeting when she says, “Isn’t there some sort of group called the…uh…Feminist Front that we could make up some story about?” Yea, Kelli, there is a group called the Feminist Front and yes, Greg Rivera did make up a story about us. How dare you imply it was truthful.
What we were all talking about was how the issue of abortion, and the taking away of this right, is simply another way for men—especially white capitalist men—to control and oppress women. It is the ideology of male domination and female subordination that we women must fight against; not simply the law (the denial of abortion rights), but the ideology behind it.
We were talking about the women’s liberation movement—something outside of the established political realm. It is this political system and the ideology behind it that oppresses us. We discussed how the ideology and government that backs it, to oppress women, is the same ideology and government that oppresses the black population and all other minority groups.
We understand and were talking about the fact that the women’s liberation movement is part of a bigger movement—the fight for all forms of human struggles against oppression.
We were not talking about legislation. Nor were we talking about abortion rights in particular. Rather, we were connecting anti-abortion forces to the oppression of all women and all minority groups—basically, the oppression of all those who are not white upper-crust males!
