Education first
November 16, 1989
It is only Wednesday of the week following the University of Southwestern Louisiana-NIU football game and I am already sick and tired of the complaints coming from Jerry Pettibone and the NIU Huskies. First of all, they are here for us as a form of entertainment, we are not here to stroke their petty egos.
Secondly, let’s look at why we are here. We STUDENTS are basically here to obtain an EDUCATION. Being that this is the time of the year when our professors feel is their last chance to give one last test, paper or assignment before finals week, it isn’t surprising that the stadium was empty.
It isn’t that we didn’t want to be there; it isn’t because of the strict NIU tailgating rules (or any of the reasons given in Bob Regan’s column in the Nov. 8 Star). It isn’t even because Mr. Pettibone relies on the runway too often in situations where passing the ball would be much more prudent (such as the last two minutes of the game). It’s because we, or our parents, are paying to obtain an education at NIU. So when it comes to a choice between going to a football game or studying for a test so that I can graduate this December, there is no question.
