Choose gender?
November 3, 1989
The Northern Star appropriately titled my previous letter “Be responsible.” In that letter I said there were other issues I wanted to address regarding the abortion issue. Well, here’s one of them: gender-selective abortion. Let’s title this one “Be consistent.”
Briefly, a woman (or couple) who makes her (their) decision whether or not to abort on the sex of the fetus practices gender-selective abortion. This practice is becoming more and more common, especially in underdeveloped countries where males are more valuable than females to the family in terms of economics. Of course, our feminist friends cry “foul” at this one. This is, however, blatantly inconsistent with the pro-choice position that sights economic reasons (presumably part of that elusive concept “quality of life”) for abortion rights in general.
If you don’t buy that line, try this. A woman who aborts a female fetus (which, incidentally, partially admits that an unborn fetus does have an identity) is using a feminist position (pro-choice) to justify an anti-feminist act (killing of female fetus). Whoa! Did you catch that? Read it again if you didn’t. You would be hard pressed to find a more inconsistent (dare I say hypocritical?) position!
Why feminists insist on the stressful state being ethically inconsistent, I will never know. But I do know this: The only way to be truly consistent is adopt a no-compromise, anti-abortion position.
