SA awaits approval of process
November 9, 1989
The Student Association will have to wait until next month for approval to change the selection process of the University Council’s 14 student members.
Presently, only seven of the 14 UC appointments are made by the SA, with the remaining seven appointed by the Student Advisory Council of each college. SA President Huda Scheidelman said the appointments are not made in accordance with the UC constitution.
Scheidelman’s proposal would give the SA the power to make all 14 of the UC appointments, and at its discretion, could accept or reject the SAC nominations before they came to the council for final approval.
Laura Bukala, SAC from the College of Business, opposes the proposal, arguing that it does not appropriately distribute authority. Bukala said the proposed selection process gives the SA ultimate control over appointments.
Scheidelman said the proposal would give the SA accountability for the positions and allow the SA to regulate the attendance and participation of the members representing the advisory councils.
“By giving the SA accountiblity for all student UC members, we can make sure the representatives of the advisory councils are adequately representing the students,” Scheidelman said.
In other UC matters, the council did not approve changes to the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award as presented by the Undergraduate Coordinating Council. These changes would have given the award recipient permanent increase in salary rather than the current one-time monetary award.
The UC also approved a constitution and bylaws for the Campus Parking Commission.
