Good intentions
October 2, 1989
I feel I owe a public apology for marching the Huskie Marching Band into the alley next to the Egyptian Theatre for a “pep fest.” I felt so proud when the athletic and music department said they would cooperate with my “wish” to have the band and football team at CornFest. I felt so much pride I wanted to share “them” with our CornFest community. My original wish was to have the band march from Fourth Street to Second Street and proceed north to the sound stage area, but because of electrical cords, insurance liabilities, etc. it wasn’t possible.
Three hundred plus people in the that mall alley is “full.” I stood outside of the alley and tried to convince people to go in and they wouldn’t. So it turned out to be a bad deal all around. The good deal was that, while lining up at Fourth Street and performing then proceeding down to the mall, people were so pleased and proud. I have only heard positive comments about the marching band and their performance.
I sincerely apologize to Mr. Bibb, Marge, each and every band member, the football team, Mr. Pettibone and anyone else I may have missed. The idea was sound, it just didn’t turn out as I had anticipated.
