It just doesn’t seem worth it, does it? Out on a Saturday night, a bunch of guys with nothing better to do pull a man from behind the wheel of his car and beat him up. Boy, that sounds like a lot of fun.

But the fun is just beginning for the five white males who assaulted a black NIU student Saturday night in the 900 block of Hillcrest Drive.

The DeKalb police are investigating the incident because it occurred off-campus. We hope anyone with information about the midnight attack will contact the police to aid them in their investigation.

It’s easy to look the other way when an event such as this occurs. The NIU administration deserves praise for bracing itself against the violence of the attack and pledging the swift and direct punishment of those involved.

The NIU Student Judicial Office has threatened disciplinary action against those involved. If the attackers are NIU students, they face sanctions of the Student Judicial Code in addition to criminal charges. There’s something for these guys to write home about.

“Hey Mom and Dad, I beat somebody up last weekend. Yeah, it was really cool. I read in the paper that he had to get 12 stitches at the hospital. Aren’t you proud of me?

“Oh, by the way, I have a new address. Yeah. Write to me in care of the local prison.”

Was it really worth it, gentlemen?
