Early judgement

This is in response to Tracy Lynn Deis’ letter, “Arrest suspects.” In an attempt to make the beating incident a racial issue, I found her letter weak and with little factual information. I too, find it a disgrace that a man, regardless of his race, was beaten up by five individuals because of a minor disagreement.

In Deis’ letter, she stated that the victim was “not the type to provoke five white men to try to kill him!” In the Oct. 23 Star article, there was no indication that there was an attempted murder. Also in the article, DeKalb Police Lt. Richard Moudy said that “nothing in this case is racial…” However, Deis continually describes these men as being racist.

It is possible that these men reacted violently because they were consuming alcohol. I am not saying that there is no possibility of racism in this case, and I do think the suspects should be arrested; however, Deis is labeling them without any basis to do so. And she claims that “the DeKalb Police don’t hesitate to take blacks to jail for everything from jaywalking to fist fighting.” Where did she get this information? And am I to believe that the police force only arrests criminals who are black?

In her letter she prosecutes these men. Who is Tracy Lynn Deis to be the judge to determine the lives of these men? She stated that she “wants these devils put up under the jail, and left to rot.” Would she make the same statement if the suspects were black? I don’t know, but if she wouldn’t then wouldn’t that make Deis racist, too?
