Vandalism is never positive
October 16, 1989
The NIU fraternities and sororities do try to do a lot for the NIU and DeKalb communities. However, if one were to take a short trip down Greek Row, they might be inclined to think differently.
It is very immature and down right destructive for someone to go to all the trouble of spray painting Greek letters on the sidewalks in some form of “art work.” This does not refer to the typical “Bob was here,” that is sometimes seen carved into park benches or on the walls in a bus station, but actual color designs that probably took a fair amount of time and effort.
Needless to say, having school spirit or pride in your organization is a good thing, but showing that pride by vandalizing public property is not.
Some people might think, “Big deal, it’s only a sidewalk.” But desecrating the city sidewalks only adds to the enormous pollution problem in the area.
This needless vandalism should be stopped. If those involved don’t stop of their own accord, the DeKalb Police Department should get involved.
Although most fraternities and sororities already have letters placed prominently on their houses, if some members feel the need to further express themselves artistically, maybe they should spray paint their own belongings instead of destroying public property and helping to make DeKalb look like a dump.
