Name calling in bad taste

After a tense week between the Student Association and the DeKalb City Council, the last thing the SA needed was to have one of its members shoot off his mouth.

Brian Subatich, SA liaison to the council, took it upon himself to inform the citizens of DeKalb that 4th Ward Alderman Rita Tewksbury is a “wicked” person. He then asked that Tewksbury resign.

Our quarrel is not that Subatich spoke his mind, and we are not ignoring the fact that tempers sometimes flare over political issues. What should be questioned is Subatich’s lack of responsibility and maturity. What exactly does “wicked” mean, Brian? Did his ease with words have anything to do with the fact his term with the SA expired the day before?

Nothing could be gained by calling someone “wicked.” Name calling doesn’t work, and now we face the possibility of the liaison position losing its credibility.

As Mayor Greg Sparrow put it, “The liaisonship has been severed or has been seriously dealt a mortal wound.”

The fact that the issue of selecting a 7th Ward alderman was made unneccesarily complicated by both sides is unfortunate. However, that situation can be corrected in the future. What is more frustrating is the fact that illogical people lost control of a routine situation.

Let’s hope the liaison position can continue to operate in an effective fashion. Let’s also hope loose lips don’t put at risk our chances for effective representation.
