High alumni attendance expected for game
October 5, 1989
A record alumni attendance for the 82nd annual NIU Homecoming football game is expected because the number of NIU alumni has surpassed the 122,000 mark.
Activities for alumni begin today at 5:30 p.m. at the Chick Evans Fieldhouse, when NIU’s Athletic Hall of Fame inducts seven new members. There also will be a banquet at 7 p.m. Interested persons should call 753-1628 for reservations.
Saturday’s events will kick off with the Homecoming parade. This year’s parade marshals will be two alumni from the class of 1930. DeKalb resident Ernest Hanson was an NIU administrator for 30 years. He retired in 1971 as vice president for the now defunct Student Personnel Services. Rockford resident Roland Wirt is a past president of the Alumni Association.
At halftime, the Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be introduced. The Marching Huskies, under the direction of Frank Bibb and Margaret Kohler, will perform at halftime and prior to the game.
Alumni should call 753-9465 to reserve game tickets. Others should call the athletic ticket office at 753-0353.
Several groups will have tailgating where alumni are welcomed. The NIU Alumni Association will have a tent, where NIU President John La Tourette will host a brunch for active members. Music will be provided by a group led by Ron Modell, director of the NIU Jazz Ensemble.
The colleges of education, business and engineering and technology will have reunions in the tailgate area. The departments of communications studies, communicative disorders, computer science and journalism will also be welcoming alumni during tailgating. The Northern Star and the Public Relations Student Society of America will be sharing a tent with the journalism department.
Honors program alumni are invited to stop by the Honors House, 146 Carroll Ave., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Housing staff alumni will hold a reunion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Neptune East residence hall.
The NIUAA will have a post-game party at the tent. A party pass will be included with every ticket purchased through the NIUAA.
Kick off time is 1:05 p.m. The Huskies will battle the Southern Illinois Salukis. For more information about Homecoming activities, call 753-1452.
