Really fighting for the flag?
October 26, 1989
In the face of impending “flagocide,” our nation’s politicians feel their guidance and expertise in protecting the American flag from extinction is justified.
However, last week a bill to place the American flag under Constitutional protection failed before the U.S. House of Representatives. This lack of support is bad news for those politicians who have postured themselves firmly behind the support of such an amendment.
This defeat is good news for those who believe that the right to free expression far outweighs political power grabbing. Let’s face it. The real reason why the flag issue has been so prevalent is because politicians really know when to jump on the bandwagon. It is very doubtful that the self-proclaimed purveyors of patriotism give two hoots about protecting the flag. The real issue is, and always has been, garnering enough votes to win re-election. And who would vote against a person who dramatically supports the Old Stars and Stripes?
Bush used the flag to help him beat Mike Dukakis. What else should one expect but to see Bush continue his campaign? Willie Horton and the flag were used against Dukakis, and now Bush can once again use the flag to chalk up even more public relation’s points.
Holding the American flag close to one’s heart is appropriate only for those who support the ideals behind the symbol; that is how the real meaning stays alive.
