Lacrosse club takes tourney with 0T win
October 17, 1989
A dramatic 12-11 overtime win over Wisconsin-Madison Sunday lifted the NIU Lacrosse Club to it second consecutive title at its own Fall Lacrosse Tournament.
The title game of the eight-team tourney, which was held on the field west of Stevenson Towers, was a back-and-forth struggle in which both the Badgers and the Huskies grabbed the lead several times. NIU leaped to a 3-0 lead early in the first half before four unanswered goals helped the Badgers take a 9-6 advantage at intermission.
The Huskies countered early in the second half, using an intense fastbreak offense to tie the game at 10-10. Both teams added one goal late in regulation before midfielder Matt Besler supplied the winning point, a bounce shot with a minute gone in the overtime period.
Attackman Ed Falkenhayn paced the Huskie offense with three goals, while Jim Marvin, Mike Hudzinski and Jim Corbett added two goals each. Defenseman Chad Anderson and goalie Jim Seeley provided the spark that helped the team recover from a weak first-half defensive performance. Anderson and Seeley helped limit the Badgers to just two second-half goals.
“We played as a team this whole tournament,” said Marvin, an attackman and the team’s coach. “It’s only fitting that the final win was a team victory.”
NIU had gained a berth in the finals with an 11-3 rout over Iowa and a 13-4 decision against Purdue.
The Huskies, now 7-1, will cap their fall season with a pair of games this weekend. The games will take place Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. west of Stevenson Towers.
