Sgt. Peppers, home of beer nuggets and more
October 25, 1989
Here at NIU beer nuggets are a staple of college life. There’s just no denying it. They are about as important in weekly menu scheduling as pizza itself.
When you come home late at night, or have spent the evening studying and you’re hungry, what do you do?
You know you culdn’t possibly eat a whole pizza but you crave that pizza taste. Of course, you order beer nuggets.
NIU has seen many different variations of beer nuggets over the years. But, do you know who the original creators of the delicious beer nuggets are?
All true nugget fans now that Sgt. Peppers, 1022 W. Lincoln Hwy., make the original, one of a kind, beer nuggets.
Perhaps what is even more interesting is the not-so-well-known story behind the creation of the nuggets themselves. According to Sgt. Peppers day manager Ken Syrek, the nuggets were the result of a food fight gone to the extreme.
Syrek said that one night some of the employees got into a dough fight in the kitchen. As the dough throwing escalated one of the employees noticed that pieces of dough had landed in the deep fryer. The result? The first beer nuggets.
However, the beer nugget is only one of the many taste tempting delights offered on Sgt. Peppers menu. They have a variety of pizza combinations and delicious sandwiches all served hot and fast.
The restaurant, or, as their logo reads, eating emporium, trys to model itself after the Beatles and their album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
In keeping with this theme they have labeled various food items with names such as Helter Skelter Salad, Rocky Racoon Pizza and Lonely Hearts Club.
Sgt. Peppers has been serving the area for about twelve years with what Syrek calls “a relaxed, laid back atmosphere.”
The restaurant is open each day from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 12 p.m.-10 p.m. on Sunday. Delivery is also available.
Sgt. Peppers has expanded their menu in the past two months. However, according to Syrek, thoughts of expanding the restaurant itself have been toyed with.
In honor of Halloween, Sgt. Peppers is offering some holiday specials. The festivities will begin the weekend before Halloween and all Sgt. Peppers staff will be performing their duties in costume.
In addition, other Halloween characters such as the Grim Reaper and Satan will be making an appearance at the restaurant. See Sgt. Peppers promotional ads for more information about the food specials being offered.
