Ideas effective
October 5, 1989
Oct. 29, the men of Phi Sigma Kappa hosted a party for the brothers of the fraternity and their invited guests. The general consensus from those attending the party was that it was perhaps one of the most organized, most successful and most fun parties hosted by the fraternity in the recent past.
However, a very ironic and interesting thing occurred throughout the duration of the party. No alcohol was served by the general fraternity to any guests. In efforts to eliminate the risk and liability incurred when serving alcohol to guests (especially minors), the chapter adhered to a “bring your own” alcohol policy. In no way is the fraternity trying to condemn the use of alcohol. It is only suggesting that in light of the many recent accidents, deaths, lawsuits and campuses forced to “go dry” due to irresponsible alcohol use, that perhaps it is time to consider positive changes in the area of alcohol use before any further tragedies occur.
I strongly urge all individuals and organizations who regularly host parties at which they illegally serve liquor to examine their alcohol practices and consider whether or not the risks they are taking are worth it. To the surprise of many, Phi Sigma Kappa demonstrated that a good time can still be had without taking any unnecessary risks by simply acting more responsible. I would like to sincerely thank the members and guests of Phi Sigma Kappa for supporting our new policy.
