‘Look Who’s Talking’ light, clever

By Johanna Harris

Most babies don’t think or utter too many words, let alone full sentences, between birth and two years. Baby Mikey is a special case, though, and has no problems voicing his opinions and concerns to his mother in the movie “Look Who’s Talking.”

Mikey doesn’t actually talk, but his thoughts are conveyed through the well-done voiceover of Bruce Willis.

Kirstie Alley plays Mollie, Mikey’s mom, who needs a father for her illegitimate son but can’t seem to find a man who isn’t a.)a nerd, b.)super-uptight, c.)obnoxious, or d.)all of the above. The obvious daddy choice, at least in Mikey’s eyes, is right under Mollie’s nose in the character of James (John Travolta), her cab driver-turned babysitter.

James is funny and energetic as Mikey’s pal, who babysits when Mollie goes out with the “yutzes” she’s screening for possible fatherhood. However, Mollie sees James as too free-spririted and happy-go-lucky, not to mention too poor, to be a suitable father figure for her precious son.

Bruce Willis couldn’t be a better person to play the part of Mikey’s thoughts. His sarcastic and snappy lines go perfectly with Mikey’s facial expressions, making the voiceover very believable in the context of the movie.

Kirstie Alley, although aggravatingly spineless in some parts, is very amusing as an uptight yuppie accountant prone to having absurd fantasies about the problems in her life. John Travolta, who still looks as young as Vinni Babarino, is cast well as her more easy-going counterpart who is also Mikey’s main man.

The supporting cast also works well in rounding out this nice little comedy. One aspect that could have been left out, however, is some car chasing action that only seems to be a weak attempt at needless suspense.

Although “Look Who’s Talking” is a predictable movie, that’s one fact that doesn’t really take away from the comedy and romance it conveys. “Look Who’s Talking” is definitely a neatly done piece that will entertain the viewer who is looking for a light and clever movie.
