F-hockey dominates Tiger unit
September 28, 1989
That’s what the NIU Field Hockey team was wondering after it dominated the 19th-ranked West Coast foes by a 5-0 margin Thursday night under the lights of Huskie Stadium.
The Huskies actually went into the match not knowing the ranking or the style of play of the Pacific Tigers, a coaching philosophy on the part of Laurie Bell, which obviously worked.
NIU played like a team possessed.
The Huskies started out the game with a score on the opening pass-back. Laura Wehrman connected with only 1:14 elapsed on an assist from Maaike Schroeder.
That would be Schroeder’s first assist of the game, but she didn’t stop there. Schroeder had three more assists and a goal of her own.
“Maaike came to play,” Bell said. “We’ve been waiting for her to get more aggressive and she certainly showed that she could play tonight.”
Kristina Hahn chipped in the second goal of the contest with 15:32 gone. Laura Wehrman had the third score and Schroeder ended the first half rally with her fourth and fifth points of the game.
Sweeper Alice Wassman netted the final goal midway through the second half to end the scoring with NIU taking an invincible 5-0 lead.
Goalie Jeltje Janssen recorded her second shutout of the season with a dazzling performance in the net.
“I’m happy for Jeltje,” Bell said. “She made some beautiful saves. She’s been working very hard and it is definitely showing.”
The main reason the Huskies were able to be so dominate was they were able to get the ball in the net, something they haven’t been able to do in previous games.
“After three days of strictly scoring drills, they responded,” Bell said. “Our front line did particularly well.”
The NIU defense played well once again.
“Their goalkeeper was very strong and they played very well tonight,” Pacific coach Carla Konet said. “They were quicker and their passing was better than ours which allowed them to control the game.”
It was also a satisfying game for Bell in the sense that NIU was able to get everyone in the game.
“It was a good effort all around,” Bell said. “It’s good to beat a top 20 team. Now, we have to focus on Michigan State and end our home play with two wins.”
The Huskies put their 3-3 record on the line on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against conference rivals Michigan State University in thier last home match of the year.
As of right now, the Huskies don’t know much about the Spartans, which could be a positive sign.
