China display enlightens
September 14, 1989
The NIU community had the opportunity this week to look at displays and discuss one of the biggest events in world history this year—the pro-democratic demonstrations in China.
An exhibit representing the views of the Chinese government and student protestors involved in the Tiananmen Square massacre was on display in the Holmes Student Center this week.
The efforts of the NIU Hong Kong Student Concern Group to share the problems and ideals of their culture with their American peers was well worth it.
Interested students had the opportunity to learn about the demonstrations by watching a videotape and studying pictures displayed on the walls, but an even greater opportunity was available.
If students or other onlookers were socialable, they might even have been able to speak with students who were actually involved in some parts of the Tiananmen Square incident.
This event was an excellent opportunity for the NIU campus to get first hand information about the Tiananmen Square tragedy and to get acquainted with students from a variety of cultures. Educational events that help NIU students better understand other cultures, even if it is to explain such a tragic event, are worthwhile and hopefully will continue and be as successful as this display.
