The NIU volleyball team came home with a 3-3-1 showing following a weekend trip to California.
In the Western Invitational Tournament, the Huskies came back after a rough 1-1-1 beginning Friday to go 2-2 on Saturday. NIU lost their tourney opener to Sacramento 15-8, 15-3. Then they came back and defeated Western Washington 15-6, 15-11 and then split with Cal State-Dominguez Hills 15-8, 11-15.
The Huskies came back after the shaky start Friday to beat Cal State-Los Angeles 2-15, 16-14, 15-12 and the host California-Davis 15-4, 11-15, 15-12.
NIU was not able to keep the mometum. The Huskies were defeated by San Francisco State 15-10, 16-14 and Chaminade 15-12, 15-9. Because these matches were only two out of three games, they will not count toward the season record which still remains 1-4.
“To go 3-3-1 on a long road trip was a good showing,” said second-year head coach Pete Waite. “We just need to learn how to finish our opponent’s off and play to the end of a match. Friday’s games were a little rough around the edges, but we loosened up Saturday and played much better.”
