Assault must be stopped
September 21, 1989
It’s Saturday morning and the unthinkable has happened. Somewhere in the music and laughter and fleeting moments of last night hides an unforgettable memory. Something happened that you thought could never happen to you. You were raped last night.
Rape victims often blame the attack on their own behavior and shame themselves into believing that they provoked the attack. In any case, they are wrong.
It is probably extremely difficult for sexual assault victims to piece together their emotions and come up with a strong will to take action against their attacker. This is why we must continue and improve upon counseling services available to these victims immediately after the incident.
Even if the attacker is an acquaintance or a friend, the attacker must be told that what he did was wrong. Not funny, not macho or cool or something to brag about, but wrong.
Sexual assault is a very personal subject and not something most victims will openly discuss. But if the incident is not discussed, the attacker will continue attacking and the victim will be a victim for the rest of his life. Thank you, to the local groups that help these victims, hopefully you will be able to continue and even improve upon the services available so offenders are punished and not victims.
