Another weekend away from home was not too kind for the Huskie volleyball team.
The Huskies finished with a 1-3 record at the Eastern Michigan/Ann Arbor News Classic, dropping their record to 2-8. Last Friday, NIU lost its first match in a tough game against Bowling Green (15-5, 9-15, 15-1, 15-6). NIU coach Pete Waite said that Bowling Green was just too good of a team. Later that evening, the Huskies came back to take a straight game victory over Villanova 15-11, 15-3, 15-8.
Saturday was not a good day for the Huskies dropping a very tough game to Southern Illinois (8-15, 15-8, 5-15, 18-16, 15-7) and being swept by host Eastern Michigan (15-8, 15-5, 15-11).
Waite said that it was a very disappointing loss to the Salukis, but he was pleased with the effort against Eastern Michigan.
“Going into the Southern match, I thought it was a match that we had a good chance of winning,” Waite said. “We started out well, but we lost our concentration at the end.”
The Huskies were leading 14-12 in the fourth game of the SIU match, but were not able to finish up the game. Waite said the Salukis came back strong.
Going into the tournament, Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green were the teams to beat—both teams finished the tournament with 3-0 records. They did not face each other.
Jamie Steenblock, who has been playing very well, showed her abilities last weekend with 59 kills in the four matches and making the all-tournament team.
