Be ready to enlist
September 5, 1989
I am writing this letter in response to an editorial printed in the Aug. 29 issue of The Northern Star. The editorial to which I refer called for military intervention in Colombia to curb drug trafficking. I am refraining from stating my opinions on the drug problem or its control in order to allow space and to better transmit my opinion on the greater problem presented in this editorial.
The military falls under our defense department. Notice that this means our military is to be used as a defensive mechanism and not an offensive one. However, we probably only use this term to appear more civilized than we actually are.
Our government seems to have the attitude that if there is a problem, then “kick some butt.” As a parent, I try to refrain from presenting this type of opinion toward children. Why is it OK now that we are “adults?”
The Star editorial board wants to see U.S. armed forces in Colombia combatting the drug lords. Will you have the same attitude when your brother, neighbor, friend or husband is lying dead?
Our country is based on difference of opinion. I believe in that. However, I believe that people should stand behind the opinions they present.
Therefore, I call upon the editorial board of the Star to print an acknowledgement of intent to enlist for combat in Colombia if it arises, or to print a change of heart. I look forward to reading your decision.
