Fight for S. African equality

It is difficult to imagine any positive change coming out of the “terroristic” nation of South Africa. However, with the setbacks experienced by the ruling parliament in Wednesday’s elections, a ray of hope, however weak, is beginning to shine.

According to published results, the governing National Party of the country has suffered its worst setback since the installment of apartheid some four decades ago. What good news! Maybe now a precedent has been set, and the restrictive anti-minority movement will have to re-evaluate an outdated mode of governance.

The stage has been set for an even more effective anti-apartheid movement with the eight-month-old Democratic Party making a strong debut in the elections. The party is geared toward racial re-alignment and possible black-white negotiations. Negotiations are needed, but the chances appear slim for the old goats of the current system to change their colors.

If this movement does not continue, and there is always the possibility that it will not, desperate people will assume even more desperate positions and the blood shed will increase.

Democratic nations around the globe need to recognize this forward step, and assistance through donations and political influence is a must. We as a nation should help those concerned with racial eqaulity, and the results of this election indicate that our help could propel this new parliament into one that is effective and equitable for all people.
