Final round scores aid golfers over weekend

Both the NIU men’s and women’s golf teams finished strong over the weekend in their respective tournaments.

Huskie head coach Pam Tyska and her women’s team moved from a fifth-place tie to finish second at the 20-team Illinois State Lady Redird Classic (Sept. 16-17). Indiana University finished well ahead (26 strokes) of NIU in capturing the tournament title.

“After Saturday’s scores (all five NIU players shot 79-plus), we came back today and played exactly as we needed to play,” Tyska said. “Our five players rose to the occassion and shot the scores on the final 18-holes that we should be shooting all along.”

The male contingent, under the venerable eyes of coach Jack Pheanis, placed third in the 17-team Association of Mid-Continent Universities/University of Northern Iowa Invitational. The University of Illinois took top-team honors, while the University of Wisconsin finished second.

“We played super today, but so did Illinois,” Pheanis said. “We shot six under as a team.”

NIU was led by Rick Stewart (290 total) who finshed tied for second individually with Wisconsin’s Ron Wuensche.

The meet was contested over three different courses in the Cedar Falls-Waterloo, Iowa area. NIU travels to Madison, Wisc. for Friday and Saturday’s (Sept. 22-23) University of Wisconsin Badger Fall Invitational.
