The DeKalb County/NIU chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), is encouraged by the stated pro-choice positions taken by gubernatorial candidates Republican Jim Edgar and Democrat Neil Hartigan. We hope the Illinois Legislature will follow suit in spite of its past anti-choice record.

The absurdity of the Missouri law recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court extending rights of personhood to fetuses is blatantly exposed by the recent lawsuit “contending the state is illegally imprisoning a female inmate’s fetus…without being charged with a crime, allowed an attorney, convicted, or sentenced.” (Chicago Tribune, Aug. 6.)
