Summer fun can be safe
July 4, 1989
During the summer months, some of us like to relax with a cold one every now and then. Lately, however, it seems “now and then” has become more like all the time. The bars have been packed.
We are not saying that everyone who likes to tip a cold one is going out every single night, and we are not preaching. As a matter of fact, we would like to commend some of you.
Hearing the words, “No thanks. I’m the designated driver,” are refreshing to hear around a college campus—responsibility personified.
However, we must not forget to exercise responsibility in all instances when alcohol is involved. Summer spells fun for many of us. Alcohol sometimes contributes to fun, but it also can contribute to arrest, injury and death.
It might not be a bad idea to consider where and when you will be drinking this summer. Invitations for parties, happy hours and all-nighters seem to fly at us from all directions, and we rarely bat an eye as we accept.
But remember, there are not as many of us around during the summer. There are just as many police officers to remind us that they don’t care what season it is. If you’re hammered, and if you’re driving, you are in trouble.
So if you are considering tipping a few cold ones, have a designated driver take you home, stay somewhat responsible and maybe even stay home and drink on your front porch. We would like to see you around next semester.
