New Dances ’89 premiere

The NIU School of Art and School of Music with the Emergence Dance Theatre will premiere a dance for the Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble’s prestigious New Dances ’89. The work will premiere with seven other dances in concerts scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and July 21 and 22 at the Ruth Page Theatre in Chicago. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and professional dancers.

Accountancy seminar held

Roger Boiling, associate professor in NIU’s accountancy department, will lead the Subchapter S Corporations Seminar July 20 and July 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Topics to be covered include: qualifications for Subchapter S corporations, advantages and disadvantages stemming from the Tax Reform Act of 1986, and the sale of S stock and liquidation of S corporations.

The July 20 seminar will be at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza in Naperville and the July 27 session will be at the Best Western in Rosemont.

Musical fantasy ‘Peter Pan’

The Stage Company of NIU’s Theatre Arts Department will present the musical fantasy “Peter Pan” at the Norris Center in St. Charles.

Scholarship applications

The American Lung Association is accepting applications for six $1,000 scholarships for students enrolled in health-related programs. Full-time students living in DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, LaSalle and Will counties are eligible to apply until August 15.

Students must have completed at least 30 semester hours with a 2.5 grade point average. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholarship, character, dependability, ambition and potential for success in their chosen career.

Weight loss program offered

Kishwaukee Community Hospital and the Kishwaukee Family YMCA will co-sponsor a long-term weight control program designed for those who want to lose at least 20 pounds. The “Why Weight” program will consist of six educational sessions, 13 exercise sessions and one follow-up session.

“Why Weight” will begin August 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Murphy Center. Exercise sessions will start at 5:30 p.m. at the YMCA. Cost for the program is $75. Because class size is limited, pre-registration is necessary.

Political lecture on China

NIU political scientist Brantly Womack, a specialist in the politics of contemporary China, will discuss “The Historical Significance of Recent Events in China” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in room 305 of the Holmes Student Center. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Testing dates scheduled

NIU’s Office of Testing Services has announced dates for tests scheduled in the near future. The Graduate Record Exam is set for August 4 and the Pre-Professional Skills Test will be held on August 5. For more information, call 753-1203.
