Women take NSC All-Sports Trophy
June 20, 1989
Despite being a member of the North Star Conference for only two years, the NIU women’s sports program has established itself as a league powerhouse.
By winning two NSC crowns and finishing second in two other sports, NIU claimed the 1988-89 NSC All-Sports Trophy. NIU, which won league softball and volleyball titles and was the runner-up in basketball and tennis, finished with 58 points in the race to easily outdistance second-place DePaul, which garnered 44 points.
“Winning the North Star Conference All-Sports Trophy is symbolic of the effort Northern Illinois puts into its women’s athletic program and also makes a positioning statement about Huskie women’s athletics regionally and nationally,” said Athletic Director Gerald O’Dell.
In addition to having 12 First-Team All-NSC performers in the four sports, softball coach Dee Abrahamson and basketball coach Jane Albright both were honored as the best among their peers in the eight-school league.
