Three of the NIU baseball club’s five scheduled games from last weekend were cancelled due to the inclement weather.
The Huskies were able to fit in two games, one on Friday and one on Saturday, both of which NIU won.
On the road Friday, the Huskies defeated Rockford College 3-1. Chris Syco and Mike Osborne combined for a two-hitter with Osborne picking up the victory. Rob Weaver had two hits and reached base on all four of his at-bats, while Russ Booker went three for four.
Saturday, the club returned home for a doubleheader with Loyola. Won Kim hurled a one-hitter and struck out 10 as the Huskies rolled over the Ramblers 15-2. Dennis Van Duyne and Bill Versaskas combined for five hits and four RBIs.
Saturday’s second game and both of Sunday’s games at Wisconsin-Madison were cancelled because of the weather.
“It was 15 degrees at Madison,” said club co-president Mark Suhanek. “Even after the rain stopped, the field was unplayable.”
The Huskies play at Illinois-Benedictine Thursday and return to DeKalb this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders, the last two home dates of the season. Saturday DePaul will visit DeKalb, followed by a Loyola rematch on Sunday.
In their first matches of the season, the NIU water polo club took first-place honors at a tournament hosted by Iowa.
