Flames no match for Huskies’ bats

Windy City softball was no match for NIU softball Wednesday evening.

The Huskies took both games of a doubleheader by a score of 4-0 against Illinois-Chicago at Flames Field. With the wins, NIU bumps its season record to 28-7, while the Flames fall to 28-16.

Pitcher Beth Schrader and catcher Julie Sexton worked together to douse the flames in game one. Schrader allowed four hits in seven innings of play, giving the Academic All-America a season record of 16-3.

Three of the four Huskie runs came in the third inning as NIU combined hits with UIC errors. With the bases loaded, a walk to Heidi Hutchison scored the first run, which eventually became the game winning run.

NIU was able to make the most of the on-base situations, however, the Huskies did leave 11 runners on the bases for the game. Big hits in game one were triples by Sexton and Lori Reimer.

In game two, the Huskie spread their scoring out a little more, with runs coming in the third, sixth and seventh innings. NIU racked up nine hits in the nightcap.

Once again, NIU made the most of UIC’s three errors to set up scoring situations.

Defensively, the Huskies played an errorless game. The stellar defense enabled pitcher Kristin Vandenhouten to pick up her seventh win of the season, to go along with one loss. The freshman hurler gave up only three hits in game two.

“We hit the ball really well,” said Huskie head coach Dee Abrahamson, whose team is ranked 17th in the nation and No. 2 in the Midwest region behind Oklahoma State. “We also played some really good defense. We made some really nice plays and we got a chance to play a lot of our people in a lot of situations. These are the kind of games we needed heading into the conference tournament.”

The NIU-UIC game can be seen on SportsChannel Saturday at 4 p.m. with Bill Baker doing the play-by-play announcing.

The next game for the Huskies is Saturday, as the North Star Conference kicks off its 1989 tournament.
