April 16, 1989
NIU’s women’s tennis team decided to show off a bit before Saturday’s Parent’s Weekend crowd and did so in a big way. The Huskies soundly defeated both Bradley University (7-2) and Saint Mary’s College of Indiana (8-1) to improve the season mark to 15-7.
“I’m really pleased with the 2-0 day, especially coming on our Parent’s Weekend,” NIU coach Patty Groth said. “We are on top of every aspect of our games right now and are looking especially strong in singles.
“All of the confidence levels are high and we are playing very consistently and patiently on the court,” she said.
Top Huskie singles player Natasha Koprivica climbed above the 25-win mark for the season with a pair of straight set victories. Koprivica moved to 26-6 for the year and has won her last four matches in two sets. Number six singles Lisa Boedecker used wins over her Bradley and St. Mary’s opponents to increase her winning streak to six and up her season record at the position to 11-1.
NIU swept the singles in straight sets to start the day versus Bradley. The Huskies added their seventh point with a victory at number one doubles. LeeAnne Milne and Heidi VanLankvelt came back from a 5-7 first set loss to take the match with 6-4, 6-1 scores in the last two sets. Saturday’s win was NIU’s second straight victory over Bradley this year.
The Huskies go for their third straight home victory in the season finale Thursday (April 20) against Wheaton College (3 p.m.).
