Marketing gives second chance

By Lori Wilkosz

NIU students who are denied admission into the marketing department have a second chance to pursue a marketing degree.

Marketing faculty developed a policy last semester that would allow denied marketing department applicants the chance to reapply to the school, said Judi Keeley, academic advisor for the department.

The policy also allows students to apply for admission into the marketing department who are denied admission into other departments in the College of Business, she said.

All students admitted into the college are eligible for reapplication, Keeley said.

Students reapplying are required to submit a letter stating whey they are reapplying, a statement of their career plans, a copy of college transcripts, a list of work leadership and service experience, a current resume and a list of references, she said.

Transcripts are required because students might have earned bad grades in classes that do not pertain to marketing, and better grades in classes that do, Keeley said. A class such as communications is related more to marketing than an accounting class, she said.

A committee of three faculty members and one student evalate the packets and vote on who should be admitted to the marketing department, Keeley said.

The new policy allows those interested in pursuing a marketing degree a second chance, she said.

The marketing department offers the only second chance policy at NIU, Keeley said.

“Personally, I think it’s a good idea because it gives those that are dedicated to marketing another chance. People that are dedicated to marketing can prove it more than those that couldn’t get into finance or accounting and use marketing as a last resort,” said Joy Mossman, a senior marketing major.

“The policy enables students that want to pursue a marketing degree who may not have the grades but have the ability to prove their ability in marketing,” said Patty Nykaza, a senior marketing major.

Keeley said between 20 and 25 students reapplied last semester after being denied admission and about 50 percent of those were accepted.

Admission requirements of the marketing department vary each semester, depending on the number of openings, she said. The number of graduates determine the number of openings

“The marketing department tries to maintain about 450 students each semester,”Keeley said.

Grade point average requirements also vary each semester, and differ between continuing NIU students and transfer students.
