UPs investigate acts of indecent exposure
March 2, 1989
The University Police Department is searching for a male suspected in two indecent exposure incidents on campus.
UP Sgt. Ralph Taylor said preliminary reports indicate that the two Feb. 16 incidents in Cole and DuSable Halls occurred “pretty close together.” Exact times of the incidents are not available because UP computers are temporarily inoperative, he said.
The subject is described as a male caucasian in his early 40s with black, graying hair, thinning on top. The subject is about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds with an average build. He was dressed in a white shirt, black pants, shoes and jacket at the time of the incidents, reports state.
The subject “might be involved in other incidents that have occurred on campus, but at this point we don’t know for sure,” Taylor said. The UPs are not considering that the subject is a student, he said.
Composite sketches by the DeKalb Police Department from two victims’ statements have been distributed throughout campus and local media agencies, Taylor said.
Public indecency is a Class A misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or one year in prison, Taylor said. The penalty for the crime does not increase with the number of incidents, he said.
The case is in the UPs jurisdiction regardless of where the subject is apprehended because the incidents occurred at NIU, Taylor said. “It’s our case. The initial place of occurrence is on campus,” he said.
Taylor encourages people to contact the UPs if they recognize the subject or have additional information. UP informants may remain anonymous, he said.
