Committee considers options

A space availability problem at the Holmes Student Center might warrant the need for an addition, but some members of a space study committee want to be sure all usable space is occupied before plans for renovations are developed.

The Student Services and Activities Space Study Committee discussed Monday whether they should recommend adding space to the student center or look at other areas for student organizations.

Anthony Fusaro, committee member and assistant provost for budget and space, said the committee is having difficulties with its progress because they are “looking at space relocation without thinking about an addition” to the student center.

“I don’t know whether we’re going to have a productive discussion if there isn’t an agreement” about an addition to the student center, Fusaro said.

Student Association President Paula Radtke, who is also co-chairman of the committee, said, “Students refuse to pay an additional fee (to expand the student center) unless they know all of the student center space questions have been answered first.”

The space needs of the Career Planning and Placement Center and the Counseling and Development Center are too large to fit in the student center without an addition, Fusaro said.

Both offices are located on the second floor of Swen Parson Hall, but the committee is considering moving them to the student center.

A lack of space in Swen Parson has forced the relocation of the offices for more space. Officials want the centers in the student center so they can be in the middle of student traffic.

Even with the relocation of the offices into the student center, adequate space might not be available.

Fusaro said that without an addition to the student center, “all we can do is shoehorn these groups (the career planning and counseling centers) into a few little cubbyholes” in the student center.

Fusaro said the committee should develop space allocation plans that illustrate the student center with and without an addition.

The committee did not make any decisions about an addition to the student center. Jon Dalton, committee co-chairman and vice president for student affairs, said there have not been discussions on the specifics of a proposed student center addition.

If an addition is necessary, the square feet alloted would be based on space needs and available funds.
