Webster’s ninth collegiate dictionary defines audacity as “a bold or arrogant disregard of normal resraints.” I looked this up because I wanted to know for certain that it was properly used to describe a group of Sigma Chi little sisters coming together to give back some the friendship and support we’ve received from the men of Sigma Chi.

A group of the little sisters got together and decided to throw a party for our friends, and I didn’t realize that these so called sanctions meant that the members of Sigma Chi weren’t allowed to go out on the weekends! Sorry, dad, for disobeying.

Haven’t we taken this a little too far? Does this mean that over Christmas break a bunch of friends can’t get together and have a party just because they all happen to be Sigma Chis? And are they also banned from attending the bars together? Is that also considered a social function? And is there a certain number of people that qualifies it as a “social function?” I think we’d all really like to know!!

On Nov. 1, 1988, I, along with every other little sister organization on this campus, was told that we are not an official part of the houses we are little sisters for and we are for all intents and purposes not recognized by the university as being greek in any way, shape or form! So I ask you, why then, is a party given by a non-greek person, in an off-campus, off-Greek Row house, though containing more than 10 brothers of Sigma Chi called a “greek social function????”

Shouldn’t we be trying to bind together as a university, not rip it apart by blowing things out of proportion and making things seem that much worse?!

I admit that I did not see the skit, but I bet that more than 50 percent of this university didn’t either!! Therefore, wouldn’t it make sense to get off whichever bandwagon you’ve jumped on and find out exactly what is so audacious to you?! It happened—it’s over with! And the entire Sigma Chi house is standing together and taking everything that’s been dished out to them. But do they really deserve excommunication from the earth?
