Driver not at fault
January 27, 1989
Traffic traveling too fast?? Oops, another student bites the dust from a hit by a car??? Stupid old cars, make them go slower!!! I cross Normal Road several times a day on foot and I also drive down this road so I see both sides of the story. Most cars traveling too fast are driven by students in a hurry to get somewhere in the super little fast cars, so they SHOULD be aware of the students crossing the streets since they are one of them.
I have stopped on the curb waiting for traffic only to see a group of people completely absorbed in talking walk right in front of traffic without a glance in either direction, and when a car has the audacity to honk at them, the driver usually gets a hand jester or verbal abuse.
Perhaps the limit is a little too high; yes there is more traffic because Carroll Avenue is closed. But until students take charge of their lives and watch out for themselves, it’s not the driver’s fault. Adequate crosswalks are well marked for students.
Traffic doesn’t STOP in the rest of this town whenever a pedestrian wants to cross the street; it shouldn’t have to just because you’re a college student on campus.
