Alleged hazing investigated
December 9, 1988
An alleged hazing incident involving a black sorority is under investigation by university officials.
Felicia Thomas, Black Greek Council adviser, refused to disclose the name of the sorority or details involving the actions which occurred during the incident.
Pledges of the sorority were “stopped on the sidewalk” by Jeff Cufaude, activities adviser for University Programming and Activities, she said.
Cufaude said he witnessed the incident a-week-and-a-half to two weeks ago and brought it to Thomas’ attention for further investigation.
“The hazing definition is broad. I witnessed something that may be defined as hazing,” he said.
Thomas said she has met with members of the sorority and the pledges regarding the incident, but “no actual case of hazing has been determined right now” and no disciplinary action has been taken.
“We cannot take action to discipline unless a problem has been determined,” she said.
