Fraternity members engage in fight at bar
December 6, 1988
Two Delta Upsilon fraternity members engaged in a fight Saturday night at Otto’s, 118 E. Lincoln Highway, which resulted in one being thrown through the bar’s front window.
Dean Chalmers threw Chris Martin through the east side of the outside front door, the DeKalb Police Department report states. The window was valued at $250.
Martin, a 22-year-old NIU senior, would not comment on the incident. Chalmers, also a 22-year-old senior, was unable to be reached for comment.
Robert Daniels, owner of Otto’s, said the fight began about midnight inside the bar. He said his employees separated the two men and made them leave the premises.
After the two fraternity members were outside the bar, they began to fight again and one threw the other through the window from the outside of the bar, Daniels said.
“The fight had nothing to do with the bar or the employees,” he said.
Daniels said he has filed a complaint against Chalmers and expects him to pay for the window. However, he said he will file damages with his insurance company.
The police report states Daniels signed a complaint for criminal damages against Chalmers.
The police report also states that when police arrived, Martin was bleeding from three wounds. It states, “He (Martin) stated that he was pushed into a picture window and was cut when the window broke.
“Martin said he was pushed by Chalmers,” the report states.
Martin was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital for treatment, the report states. Police told Martin to sign a complaint at the police department after completion of the treatment, it states.
“Attempts to pick up Chalmers will be made after Martin signs a complaint,” the report continues.
Veto Positano, DU’s little sister coordinator, said Chalmers was not evicted from the chapter for the incident. He said the chapter is not sanctioning Chalmers for the fight.
