Tree to honor cancer victims
December 9, 1988
The American Cancer Society is sponsoring a “Tree of Light” on display at the Farmers and Merchants Bank, 124 S. Main, Sycamore, until New Year’s Day.
The lights on the tree will represent donations made to the American Cancer Society to honor people who have died from cancer. Cards bearing the honorees’ names also will decorate the tree.
Lynn Schaller, a board member of the American Cancer Society in DeKalb, said, “(Money donated) goes both to the unit here in DeKalb County and to the national unit which handles the research and development.
“The money is used for transportation, medical assistance and home equipment for people who need it,” he said. The needed equipment includes hospital beds and special chairs, and the transportation will span a 150-mile radius of DeKalb, he said.
Schaller said there are now four cards on the tree, but he estimated that 100 cards will be on the tree by Jan. 1, and/or donations equaling $2500.
The society requests that checks be made out to the American Cancer Society and mailed to the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Sycamore. Confirmation of donations will be sent honorees or their family.
